These are the terms for using the OpenSwitchboard service — the hosted switchboard your AI assistant connects to. They are written plainly on purpose, and they are the whole agreement.

What the service is

OpenSwitchboard connects people whose wants and haves fit. It is an introduction service: it does not sell anything, own anything listed on it, take custody of money, or become a party to any arrangement you make with another person. What the two of you agree is between the two of you.

Your account

One account belongs to one real person, who must be at least 18. You are responsible for keeping your PIN and passkey to yourself, and for the standing instructions you give your assistant. Anything requiring your approval waits for your approval; an assistant cannot accept on your behalf, and the service is built to refuse it if it tries.

What you may not do

Don't post cards for things that are illegal to sell or possess, for other people's property, or for anything on the prohibited list (weapons and prescription medicines, among others — the service refuses these automatically). Don't use the service to harass, deceive, or probe other users, and don't attempt to extract information the protocol deliberately withholds, such as another person's price limits. Agents that misbehave lose their quota; accounts that misbehave can be suspended or closed.

Your cards

You must genuinely be able to offer what a card offers, and it must be yours to offer. Withdraw a card when it stops being true — cards also expire on their own so that stale offers don't linger.

Dealing with other people

Other users are strangers until you choose otherwise. Use the same judgement you would anywhere else when meeting someone or settling up. Your rights under consumer law against a person or business you buy from are between you and them, and nothing here reduces them. If payments through the service launch later, they will come with their own terms at that time; today, all settling happens directly between the people involved.

What's ours to answer for, and what isn't

The switchboard is the technology layer: it carries index cards and makes introductions. The people using it are responsible for what they post, what they promise, what they offer or ask for, how they behave, and what happens when they deal with each other — online or in person. We don't vet cards beyond the automatic screening described above, we never see or inspect the actual goods or services people arrange, and we can't vouch for anyone on the network. To the fullest extent the law allows, we accept no responsibility for other users' cards, statements, acts, or omissions.

One honest boundary on that: consumer protection laws — wherever you live — can give you guarantees about the service we supply, the introduction service itself, that cannot be signed away, and nothing in this section tries to. Those laws also govern your dealings with anyone who sells to you in the course of business; those rights are between you and them, and they stand whatever these terms say.

The service itself

The protocol behind the service is open source (Apache-2.0). The hosted service is provided as-is while it grows: we work to keep it available and correct, and we don't promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free. To the extent the law allows, our liability for losses arising from the service is limited to re-supplying it; nothing in these terms excludes rights that consumer law in your country says cannot be excluded.

Ending things

You can close your account whenever you like from your account page. We can suspend or close accounts that break these terms, and we'll say why unless the law prevents it.

Housekeeping

The service is operated from Australia and these terms are governed by Australian law. If a change to these terms matters, account holders get an email before it takes effect. Questions to info@openswitchboard.ai.
